Vincenco Donlini ‘Self portrait at 34’ was the first self portrait painted since the nineteen seventies, with one exception in the mid eighties. It shows a confident image of the a still young man, at his easel; the painting was bought by an old friend, Julie Bennett ,who moved to Hammersmith at this time. The artist was in good spirits at the time, when he had several commissions. One of which was a teaching commission at Wormwood Scrubs Prison teaching ‘mural’ painting to the prisoners serving life sentences. ‘Wormwood Scrubs Mural’ is an example of the work the artist and the inmates created. The artist also taught ‘life drawing‘ in Gillingham, Kent as well as working with people with learning disabilities.

‘Flood in the city’ is a painting in which the artist begins to use photographs extensively. ‘Ship of fools’ also uses photography and includes the first paintings of Amanda Durston, the artist’s wife as a number of the characters, as well as the artist himself and the cartoonist and animator Daniel Postgate who was the ‘best man’ at the artist’s wedding.

The first in a number of paintings depicting a ‘Dante like’ descent into Hell was ‘Self Portrait in Hell’ the title inspired by Edvard Munch’s painting of the same name. He was increasingly angry and fearful at the world around him and his wife, he felt there was no justice in a world where greed and selfishness are the only values that are rewarded, this was in the final stages of the Thatcher government.

‘Mugger in Hell‘, ’Politician in Hell’ and ‘Saint Feminax castrating a rapist’ are ‘part’ Manga Comic ‘part’ religious icon in their influence and execution.

The paintings ‘The Sewers’ and ‘Saints Crossing the Styx’ are both painted with an acrylic ‘under painting’ and an oil paint ‘glaze’; he also uses photographs of his wife, Amanda, as the female saint.

After several trips to Greece, Vincenzo becomes increasingly interested in ‘icon’ painting and their subject matter. This prompts him to abandon canvas as a ground for his work, in favour of plywood with an acrylic under painting with an oil painted finish.

‘The Jesus Egg’ was a painting that Vincenzo believed began the ‘finding of the faith’ he had ‘lost’ in the early eighties; the artist had a dream of a drunken Christ explaining about “the three dogs in man” and the birth of the Jesus Egg.

This dream gave him a complete sense of well-being and resulted in ‘The Baptism of Christ’ depicting scenes from the ‘life of Christ’ using Michael Charles as the model for Christ. Vincenzo researched the subject matter with the help of Richard Temple and his books on icon painting at the ‘Temple Gallery’, which provided invaluable insights into the making of and traditions of icon painting.
