Vincenco Donlini The turn of the century saw more biblical imagery such as in ‘Seraph binding a demon’, ‘The Resurrection’ and ‘Saint John the Baptist’ these paintings were originally intended as a triptych. As a result of his study of icon painting he abandons canvas in favour of wood as a support for his paintings. He also begins to use ‘Holy water’ in the acrylic under painting. He was given a commission by Peter Robinson whose wife died and was cremated; Peter asked that his wife’s ashes be used in a portrait of Peter as Saint John the Baptist. ‘The lamentation of the dead Christ’ continues the theme of the life of Christ with Michael Charles as the model for Christ, he appears in ‘Christ preaching’ and ‘Christ Pantocrator.’

The events of September the 11th 2001 called into question a number of things, not least, global capitalism and Modernism as a force for good. These were the things Vincenzo considered calling into question long before the event. His choice of painting exclusively religious imagery in the late nineties show a sensitivity to global events although not a consciously prophetic one. Vincenzo chose to paint his models in drapes rather than contemporary clothing to distance himself from contemporary reportage.

‘Head of a Philosopher’ a portrait of his friend, colleague and patron Les Heath, began life as the ‘Head of God the Father’. Les shared a taste for good beer and wine and conversations on all topics including theology, philosophy and the fact that he bore a startling resemblance to the Greek Philosopher Socrates, hence the title.

‘Self Portrait at 45’ is one of several self portraits Vincenzo decided to paint each year since his fortieth birthday to record his features as he grows older.

‘We Three’ shows three women, the models for whom were Ellie Dickie (the photographer who took ‘the portrait of the artist’ on the artist profile page), Amanda Donlin the artist’s wife and Claudette Wright a friend and fellow painter. ‘The deserter’ which also began life as another title ‘The forty martyrs of Sebast’ which is a subject very rarely painted in western art. The artist and his wife saw a version of this painting on the island of Patmos, where Saint John the Divine was said to have written ‘Revelations.’

This was the subject of ‘The protectorate of Saint John the Divine’ which shows the ‘eagle’ of Saint John the Divine and the artists wife as the woman clothed in the sun and the star ‘wormwood’ descending to earth.

‘The Protectorate of Saint Luke’ shows the ‘Ox’ of Saint Luke, the patron saint of artists and doctors hence the foreground ‘still life’ of ink pens, brushes, a classical statue with a growth of mathematical solids and an asthma inhaler is the companion piece and is intended as one of four paintings depicting the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
